Day 27 (5/25/12): Trust Me, I'm Gorgeous. The Internet Told Me So.

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I’ve been thinking lately about who, or what, determines what is trendy or cool. What makes a product or venture take off? Why is it that the giant sunglasses of the 60s were laughed at in the 90s and then made a comeback as the next best thing? Why are people so adamant that one product or company or vintage is so much better than another? (Really awesome related story). Perhaps it is easier to be told what to like and go with it, rather than really think about why we may or may not like something. I explored this idea for day 27. I chose to draw a sleek, Doberman Pincher in which I adorned with beads, a coffee filter skirt, and dazzling hand-cut tops. The back of the dress-up doll is crude and messy with only a note that lets us know what we should think of the creation. “Trust Me. I’m Gorgeous. The Internet Told Me So.”

Day 26 (5/24/12): They Say I'm a FruitGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Yesterday, as I was munching on some delicious baby tomatoes given to us by friends, I looked closely at the little seeds that were dripping down from them. They reminded me of the fact that tomatoes are fruit, even though no one really considers them to be such.

I wondered if tomatoes, as well as some of those other non-fruit fruits, care that they are left out of tropical drinks. Do they all wish they were added as toppings on angel food cake or are they perfectly content being sandwiched between two pieces of bread and mixed with salads?

Day 24 (5/22/12): Seedy

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

If you have been following my daily endeavor, it may be obvious to you that I am fascinated by the little seeds I found and used in day 10 and day 14’s projects. I love how delicate they appear – even though they are pretty rigid, the textured lines that grow from their spine outward, and their perfect wing-like shape. So I thought I would interpret these traits by incorporating a drawing of the seed in day 24’s piece.

It was clear to me that I needed to pair my drawing with seeds for the 11 x 14” work. But after gluing them down it was obvious that the large drawing and the seeds competed with each other – fighting for attention and definitely not working together. I hoped that glazing each seed with paint would fix the problem, but instead, a muddy mess appeared. The seeds had to go. As I began peeling each off, great silhouettes appeared, allowing me to explore my drawing a bit further.

A pale blue sky – the backdrop for stalks standing tall. Husks peel down- a glimpse of rounded kernels which are sure to end up stuck between my teeth.

Day 22 (5/21/12): Topographic TrashGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

As I picked up yesterday’s art material from off of the ground I wondered how smart of a move it was. It was ragged, torn and initially, just looked a bit unsanitary. But upon closer inspection, I realized it – which seems to be some sort of paper- had just been weathered by the recent rain.

I glued my newly found trash-treasure to an 8 x 10” oil board and applied paint to the grooves and mountains of the tattered, island shaped paper. Breaking up the space surrounding it, I painted lines and shapes that made their way onto the weathered surface. I thought that perhaps I could make a beautiful piece from this worn paper but as I worked with it, I realized it had a personality all its own. No matter how much paint I applied, it was going to stay worn and ragged. There was no “prettying” it up. And for some reason, I am perfectly content with that.

Day 21 (5/19/12): Long NeckGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days.

Recently I’ve had a hankering to create a giraffe. Why is really unknown to me. I don’t have a particular love of giraffes and yet here I was planning this large endeavor.

The ink 29 x 12″ drawing took a few days to complete. I once again explored geometric patterning to create the creature.

Fun fact: Symbolically giraffes represent the ability to look into the future and also symbolize intuition.

Day 20 (5/18/12): Bottle Cap CanvasesGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I didn’t realize that I liked beer until I actually tasted some that had flavor. It was a lovely experience – I guess I kind of liken it to tasting really good chocolate. So as you may guess living in Fort Collins, a microbrew mecca, has been a pretty enjoyable experience. There are lots of new, flavorful beers available to taste, tours to take and beer festivals to attend. We’ve been collecting bottle caps for a few of our friends who plan to adorn themselves with bottle cap clothing for one festival. Yesterday I stole from the stash in order to create day 20’s piece.

I used the cap’s original design to guide my direction. Similar to day 13’s project, I aimed to keep the mini art simple and colorful. While I like the caps grouped, I plan to present each as individual works.

Day 17: BlockedI wasn’t particularly certain the direction I would be going on day 17, so I was really excited to come across a stamp I had made years ago. The stamp is made from cutting up an old mouse pad and gluing the design to a piece of cardboard – super high tech. I don’t think I came up with the idea, but it is a great one.

I opted for an oddball 6″ x 22″ piece of paper and got after it with the stamp using light blue and red. I emphasized the negative space using black paint. The resulting blocks of color seem to react and interact with each other to create day 17’s work.

Day 16: Cellular KaleidoscopeGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

It is always so fantastic to come across work that you absolutely fall in love with. Yesterday I did just that as I looked at Chris Marley’s pieces on Design Milk . Marley uses bugs, insects, butterflies, etc. to create his work. I think bugs are really amazing – especially beetles – so I love this. I also really appreciated the clean, geometric manner in which he laid out his designs. Marley’s work, along with my recent thoughts on cells and my urge to really dive into a big ink project is what inspired day 16’s piece.

I began the work by drawing out circles, which I thought of as individual “cells” onto my 12” x 25” paper. I tried to allow each cell to work independently as its own design, but to also interact with those around it. Lines and shapes in one circle often carried over into another creating a kaleidoscope-like image.

Day 15: Envelope GeometryGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I like business envelopes. They are boring on the outside but have really fun, often red or blue, patterning within. Yesterday, at the end of a full, full day, I began cutting shapes from old envelopes I had collected and laying them out on a page. Once I settled on a something I liked, I added geometric ink design and broke up the space using line and color. Day 14’s resulting image, like many of my others, plays with the juxtaposition of geometric and organics shapes.
