Arting for 365 Day 169: Foliage, Geometry and Photoshop

Day 169 (10/14/12): Foliage II in Blue and GreenGoal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Another attempt at “painting” in Photoshop. My yesterday’s claim that “I’ve enjoyed it”  is being edited to -“Oh my gosh this was so tedious it just about killed me.”

I must remind myself that a challenge is good for me. I’m certain of it…

This is bound to get easier with practice though, right?

Arting for 365 Day 112: Nature

Day 112 (8/18/12): NatureGoal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Yesterday our friend hosted a gourmet camping party to celebrate her 40th birthday. It was about as far from hard core camping as you can get, but was oh so lovely! We had delicious food, paired with some amazing beers – thanks to the slew of home brewers in the group – and wine. If the shindig wasn’t awesome enough, we topped it off with some forest croquet.

Being out in nature is always inspiring. And as it came time to create my day 112 project, my friends suggested I use a bit of nature. -A brilliant idea. We pulled out some pens and got busy drawing on leaves.

I love the simple designs. I also love that the leaves started out flat, but as they dried overnight, curled. Because I like the new form so much I decided I’d take a crack at resin again – coating them before they got too brittle.  I feel like I’m going to turn them into necklaces.

Arting for 365 Day 101: Fluorescent Cut Paper II

Day 101 (8/7/12): Fluorescent Paper Cut 2Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

You know when you do something and do it again in hopes of figuring out just exactly what you’re trying to do? Well, that seems to be the case with these cut paper projects. What have I figured out? I don’t know exactly except that:

  1. I go through a lot of X-acto blades
  2. My pointer finger ends up a smidge sore
  3. My flip off (aka middle) finger is building up a great callus
  4. The designs, while intricate and lovely, aren’t pushing my brain enough
  5. I need to approach them differently
  6. I’m not exactly sure what “differently” looks like

To be continued…

Arting for 365 Day 89: Cut Paper Abstraction 4 aka: First Official Project in New Studio Space

Day 89 (7/26/12): Cut Paper Abstraction 4Goal: To create one piece of work each day for 365 consecutive days

It is official. I am lucky enough to have landed some studio space at Rendition Gallery, a local joint here in Ft. Collins! I got all moved in yesterday and am super excited and a wee bit nervous for the opportunity to work and show there.

The downside to this big move is that my time spent working alongside Box (the cat) will be greatly diminished. I do, however, gain significantly more human interaction – with really great artists, no less.

My first official, completed project in the new space was this cut paper design. I feel like choosing to do a cut paper piece was a great decision for yesterday. With nerves being a bit high, it was a good way for me to relax and just enjoy the process of creating.

As for Box; his crying upon us getting home leads me to believe he is not as happy with the situation as I am.

Oh – If you’re in Ft. Collins, CO, over the next six months, stop on in. I’d love to see you!

Arting for 365 Day 42: Plinko

Day 42 (6/9/12): Plinko

8.5 x 11″ mixed media on cardboard

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I am a titch obsessed with the smell of wildfires. I like to think I have an amazing sense for detecting them via snout. In fact, I would go so far to say my uncanny ability is as near to a super power as one can get.  That is why I was shocked to see smoke from an 8,000 acre fire burning outside of Ft. Collins yesterday, long before I smelled it. I fear my super power is deteriorating. But don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I can replace it with another if needed.

For day 42’s piece I used black and red as homage to the smoke and fire taking over the hills outside of Fort Collins. I wound leaves and roots through what made me think of a red, plinko-like design created by painting bubble wrap and pressing it onto cardboard.

Arting for 365 Day 37: Winged

Day 36: WingedGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I brought my seed things with me to my parent’s house this last weekend, thinking they’d be a good out of town project to work on. I felt proud for remembering to pack them since typically I am really good at forgetting things. My pride quickly vanished as I realized that I had forgotten the acrylic coat that keeps the little guys preserved (or at least that’s my hope). But bringing them still ended up being a good thing. I found out that the plastic bread bag I keep the non-coated seeds in is not, in fact, the best way to store them. Turns out they had begun to get dry and brittle. Shocking, I know. I thought for sure this is how all museums store their artifacts. So yesterday I coated a big chunk of them and worked on day 36’s project.

Day 36: Winged Left WingDay 36: Winged 2Day 36: Right WingI knew that I wanted to do some more drawing on and stacking of the seeds, but wasn’t quite sure what I had in mind. I began laying out the seeds, gluing them down and then pulling them off. I glued a few more down and realized this thing was screaming to be a moth – which I like.

I became interested in moths a few years back when I learned about how one species in Britain had evolved to adapt to its polluted environment. The one I created is so content with itself; I don’t see it evolving anytime soon.

Arting for 365 Day 16: Cellular Kaleidoscope

Day 16: Cellular KaleidoscopeGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

It is always so fantastic to come across work that you absolutely fall in love with. Yesterday I did just that as I looked at Chris Marley’s pieces on Design Milk . Marley uses bugs, insects, butterflies, etc. to create his work. I think bugs are really amazing – especially beetles – so I love this. I also really appreciated the clean, geometric manner in which he laid out his designs. Marley’s work, along with my recent thoughts on cells and my urge to really dive into a big ink project is what inspired day 16’s piece.

I began the work by drawing out circles, which I thought of as individual “cells” onto my 12” x 25” paper. I tried to allow each cell to work independently as its own design, but to also interact with those around it. Lines and shapes in one circle often carried over into another creating a kaleidoscope-like image.

Arting for 365 Day 10: Leaves/Seeds

Goal: To create 365 works of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Day 10: Leaves/Seeds Detail 1I really love running (more correctly – jogging). I am not super good at it and I don’t know if I’ve ever even got a “runner’s high” but I get grouchy if I am not active and more importantly, I LOVE being outdoors. The feel of fresh air is always great and coming across the wonderful little visual treats that nature provides is really where it’s at for me.

A great example of one of these treats is the leaf/seed things we came across while jogging the other day. They were gorgeous and delicate and made me think of butterfly wings. We stopped to pick a handful’s worth out of the grass (yesterday I went back and filled up a bag) and I immediately began thinking of how I might create with them.

After experimenting a bit – laying them out in different ways, contemplating how they might be molded around a 3D object – I started thinking of each leaf as a mini canvas. I coated them with clear acrylic and began drawing. The final day ten project is this floral-like design. It could be pushed a bit further and as I become more familiar with working with these little treats from nature, I’m hoping this will happen.

Also, if anyone knows the name of the tree these great leaf/seed things come from, I’d love to know.
