Bird on Climb

Bird on Climb

Three, 8 x 8″ acrylic and ink on canvas

The cold rock and morning sun were a combination hard to resist. Tiny bumps and crevices lent themselves as footholds as the bird worked to conquer the steep landscape above.  The occasional misstep left her swinging and thankful for the cord of rope connecting her to the summit.  And as the minutes passed and the distance to the top diminished she reveled in the view below.

I finally finished up my bird and am, overall, pretty pleased with the little guy. Part of me wishes I had really saturated the belly and head with color, and then transitioned out to pencil. This feels a little too expected for my taste. Maybe next time!

Arting for 365 Day 332: Bird of Whimsy

Day 332, ~15.5 x 11.5" acrylic and ink on wooden palette

Day 332, ~15.5 x 11.5″ acrylic and ink on wooden palette

Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Being able to contribute art to a great cause is one perk of being an artist. My wallet is not always full enough to give to every great nonprofit I’d like, so it feels good to know I can contribute to a few organizations doing outstanding work. The local Alzheimer’s Association recently contacted me for a donation- they would provide the palette and I was free to create whatever I chose.

I opted to go with whimsy. I’m hoping the piece will bring some well-deserved money to the group and a smile to whomever goes home with it.

Smart as the  raven was, this new predicament was sure to challenge. For legs like straw and wings of sticks will only get a clever bird so far.

Slightly rattled but with his wits still about him, he paced along the shoreline.

“Think, think,” he cawed

Arting for 365 Day 226: Part of the Art Experience is Interpretation

12/10/12

30 x 12″ acrylic and ink on canvas

Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

For most of my blog posts, I attempt to describe my artwork in stories or poetry to provide insight. But sometimes I think too much explanation leaves little for the viewer to ponder. Being a viewer myself, I realize it’s nice to ponder.

So for day 226’s work I’m going to let you interpret the work as you like, with no insight from me. Instead I’ll simply talk about my technique in creating the piece.

First off, it was extremely satisfying to work on something of a slightly larger scale. While the 3 x 5″ pieces are well and good, it was nice to spread out and work. Thinking about the piece, I knew that I wanted to merge my approaches – combining realism and abstraction, ink and paint. I also wanted to explore geometric spaces paired with washes of color.

I’ve got to say, this is my new favorite piece. Not only am I happy with the concept behind the work, the flowing lines, strange juxtaposition of bright pink with earth tones make for a visually stimulating piece as well.
