Arting for 365 Day 31: Pope’s Bag of Tricks

The Pope must have a great bag of tricks. He’s somehow avoided trouble that most of us would undoubtedly run into if we were associated with all of the wrong-doings of a company/government/religion as large and impactful as his. I surmise the Vatican, and perhaps Mr. Pope, have come up with a few devices to steer him clear of any implication of wrong doings.

Vatican -Packed Pope’s Bag of Tricks Contains:

Mitre (big fancy ceremonial hat) – Perfect for storing top secret documents  -when he remembers to hide them there. This version happens to be adorned with birth control pills, which are great for decoration, just don’t plan on using them.

Male Symbol Necklace: Reminds us all of just who’s in charge. It may also have super powers.

Glasses & Big Mustache Disguise: If you can’t see him, you can’t blame him.

High Octane Bible: A little extra God juice under the robe.

I feel like the Vatican has got a great product line going here. Perhaps to bring in a bit of extra income, they should think about selling these products in a gift basket.

Arting for 365 Day 30: Subtleties

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days Day 30 (5/28/12): Subtleties

Typically the work I create is high contrast, high color, or both. Much like some of the colorful outfits I wear while running, there is little which is subtle. (Probably a fact: Wearing a minimum of three completely different colors while running makes you faster.) So yesterday I thought it would be a good challenge to take a stroll down a more muted path in creating my project.

Using pencil, I began by drawing a geometric design. I was oh-so-tempted to pull out my trusty ink pen to bring contrast to the shapes, but I stuck to pencil. I applied variations of tinted white acrylics to the canvas all while telling myself to embrace and enjoy this subtle approach.

By the time I was finished, I had come to really enjoy this break from my norm. I feel like it was probably good for my brain to approach a project in such a different way. But I also have to say I don’t see myself doing too much of it again soon.

The image below was taken at a different time of day- which goes to show how much this work reflects and reacts to the light. Day 30: Subtleties (later in the day)

Arting for 365 Day 29: Yellow Brick Road & A Rhino

Day 29 5/27/12: Yellow Brick Road & a Rhino Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 days

Rhino: A bulky yet surprisingly quick, grumpy, vegetarian  with poor eyesight who lives a relatively solitary life until the ripe old age of 35ish (or so I read, here). If he were a person, I feel like he would be the cranky neighbor on the corner that all of the kids are both a little bit intrigued by and scared of.

Observing him in today’s animal kingdom is the closest thing I can imagine to seeing a dinosaur from the past – which makes Mr. Rhino pretty amazing. Drawing him on a yellow brick road is just fun.

Arting for 365 Day 28: Geometry in Orange & Black

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive daysDay 28: Rich's Tryptic

There are days when it is nice to just draw. -To enjoy the act of creating shapes, lines and color for the soul purpose of creating. Yesterday was one of those days.

Arting for 365 Day 27: Trust Me. I’m Gorgeous. The Internet Told Me So.

Day 27 (5/25/12): Trust Me, I'm Gorgeous. The Internet Told Me So.

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I’ve been thinking lately about who, or what, determines what is trendy or cool. What makes a product or venture take off? Why is it that the giant sunglasses of the 60s were laughed at in the 90s and then made a comeback as the next best thing? Why are people so adamant that one product or company or vintage is so much better than another? (Really awesome related story). Perhaps it is easier to be told what to like and go with it, rather than really think about why we may or may not like something. I explored this idea for day 27. I chose to draw a sleek, Doberman Pincher in which I adorned with beads, a coffee filter skirt, and dazzling hand-cut tops. The back of the dress-up doll is crude and messy with only a note that lets us know what we should think of the creation. “Trust Me. I’m Gorgeous. The Internet Told Me So.”

Arting for 365 Day 26: They Say I’m a Fruit

Day 26 (5/24/12): They Say I'm a FruitGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Yesterday, as I was munching on some delicious baby tomatoes given to us by friends, I looked closely at the little seeds that were dripping down from them. They reminded me of the fact that tomatoes are fruit, even though no one really considers them to be such.

I wondered if tomatoes, as well as some of those other non-fruit fruits, care that they are left out of tropical drinks. Do they all wish they were added as toppings on angel food cake or are they perfectly content being sandwiched between two pieces of bread and mixed with salads?

Arting for 365 Day 25: Trajectory

Day 25 (5/24/12): TrajectoryGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

A trajectory through life, years in the making, that is both organic and planned. Flying around on virtual paths that intertwine and intersect. Ideas brought to fruition. Ideas come to pass. Ideas released from from a low flying plane.

Arting for 365 Day 24: Seedy

Day 24 (5/22/12): Seedy

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

If you have been following my daily endeavor, it may be obvious to you that I am fascinated by the little seeds I found and used in day 10 and day 14’s projects. I love how delicate they appear – even though they are pretty rigid, the textured lines that grow from their spine outward, and their perfect wing-like shape. So I thought I would interpret these traits by incorporating a drawing of the seed in day 24’s piece.

It was clear to me that I needed to pair my drawing with seeds for the 11 x 14” work. But after gluing them down it was obvious that the large drawing and the seeds competed with each other – fighting for attention and definitely not working together. I hoped that glazing each seed with paint would fix the problem, but instead, a muddy mess appeared. The seeds had to go. As I began peeling each off, great silhouettes appeared, allowing me to explore my drawing a bit further.

Arting for 365 Day 21: Long Neck

Day 21 (5/19/12): Long NeckGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days.

Recently I’ve had a hankering to create a giraffe. Why is really unknown to me. I don’t have a particular love of giraffes and yet here I was planning this large endeavor.

The ink 29 x 12″ drawing took a few days to complete. I once again explored geometric patterning to create the creature.

Fun fact: Symbolically giraffes represent the ability to look into the future and also symbolize intuition.
