Another friend, another baby, another project!

Some wonderful friends of ours were hoping I’d be able to paint a mural for them in their baby-to-come’s new room, but because they are renting their place, it wasn’t possible. Instead, they came up with the great idea of buying letters for me to paint.

They gave me free reign as to the direction I could take, which is always fun! After looking at the theme of the room, which is adorable African animals with a variety of sports balls, I came up with this. The imagery is definitely a bit older than the rest of the room’s decor, but I’m thinking this means he’ll be able to grow up with them a bit.

I’m hoping they’ll like them as much as I enjoyed making them.

Typically, I like winter. I really like it. I love getting out in the snow for a good ski and the crispness in the air clears my head.

Since moving to Ft. Collins, CO though, I have found that there is not much winter to be had. There is no snow to ski on and temperatures tend to hover around 30 or 40 degrees. This is precisely the reason why I think I am hankering for spring. I look forward to jogs on trails and hikes to falls, long sunny days, and branches beginning to bloom.

The rope wrapped around the oval shaped sphere. Numerous times it outlined its smooth edges. But it was difficult to say whether it was there as a help or a hindrance. Would the egg crack as it resisted being pulled to a faraway destination; or would it be carefully dropped into a bed of sticks and leaves until a force within cracked its warm white shell?

This was his sixteenth house. Rather, it was the sixteenth house he had looked at in what he felt had been an all too short weekend.

He didn’t know what exactly he wanted. But he was certain of what he didn’t want.

A two bedroom colonial was not his style. Nor was a split level.

Sigh. Bird house hunting is hard, he thought.

Dreams are interesting things. They affect us, oftentimes without knowing they are affecting us, which makes them that much more interesting. In the last week or so, I have woken up remembering bits and pieces of dreams. Some of them have been odd, others pretty normal, but there has definitely been a lot of dreaming . I have come to determine that a few of the forgotten dreams must be the impetus for the imagery that is showing up in my work.

From hanging birds in Day 275’s piece to today’s abstracted elephant snout blowing out an embryo (and you thought this painting was kind of nice until now), odd imagery is overtaking my imagination. I don’t know how long this phase is going to last, but I figure I might as well make art from it while it’s here.

If you’d like to purchase this dreamy painting, you can do so here.

Arting for 365 Day 269: Pinhole Portrait

Some of you may know I  have recently become a bit obsessed with creating images from pinholes. I’ve worked smaller scale, larger scale, abstract and realistic, and each time I feel pretty pleased with the result. Yesterday was the first day that left me wondering.

I decided a few days ago that I wanted to create a portrait using pinholes, so I took a stab at it. My feelings on the finished piece are mixed. I can’t say I don’t like it, but it just doesn’t seem to be hitting the nail on the head. Part of me feels like I should have gone a bit more hog wild with the pinholes. Part of me thinks I should have avoided using color (see below) – or at least not used it to help establish form. Maybe the pinhole approach naturally lends itself better to abstraction. Who knows? I guess more experimentation is the only real way to figure it out.
