Arting for 365 Day 313: Drifts

I thought I’d try my hand at combining different papers for my pierced image yesterday – using a lighter weight teal, and heavier 100 lb white. Here are two things I learned:

1. Putting the heavier paper on top weighed the whole thing down a bit. I should’ve let teal be the star of the show and had white around the outside. Or gotten a heavier teal.

2. The lightweight teal paper is like gizmo. As I added a hint of watercolor to it, it immediately warped. I knew this was going to happen, but at the same time I tried to convince myself it wouldn’t.

As for the design – I wanted to create an image that led the viewers eye throughout and this aspect of the piece feels pretty successful to me. More explorations of this sort are on the horizon.

I met up with an old acquaintance for coffee yesterday. He’s an artist I knew from when I lived in Wyoming and he was heading back that direction after showing some work up in Vail. It was great to sit and chat with him because not only is he super nice, he is a great example of what can happen if you keep working at the thing you love.

I was really excited to be able to share my work with him and get some feedback. We talked about some different ways I could experiment with my pierced paper pieces – including really pushing the holes further to create more form. So when I got back yesterday I spent some time staring at a marble and poking holes to try to capture the little sphere.

Overall I’m pretty happy with it. There is room for improvement, but the exercise was good in that it let me see I can really push the paper much farther than expected.

A amazingly talented poet friend of mine emailed me her latest work yesterday. It was lovely. One portion of the poem in particular, conjured up images of trees being cleared. I wanted to try to translate the imagery to a pinhole piece.

I am really pleased with the simple, delicate image that resulted.

The rope wrapped around the oval shaped sphere. Numerous times it outlined its smooth edges. But it was difficult to say whether it was there as a help or a hindrance. Would the egg crack as it resisted being pulled to a faraway destination; or would it be carefully dropped into a bed of sticks and leaves until a force within cracked its warm white shell?
