Arting for 365 Day 221: Hagfish Fibers

12/5/12

Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

There is a group on Facebook that I “like” called Evolution. They frequently post really fantastic images and/or info regarding creatures and phenomena of the world.

Yesterday I came across one of their posts that talked about a deep sea creature called the hagfish. It is a somewhat gross looking thing – like an eel but not as cute – and it produces a really incredible slime that, in seconds, turns into protein fibers that are super strong. They think the fibers could be used to create new material – perhaps even a material that would replace plastic and could be used for clothing. Amazing. How could I not be inspired to create a piece based on this fun fact? You can learn more about the hagfish here.
