Day 85 (7/23/12): Chihuly Gardens

4.75 x 4.75″ Pastel and ink on paper

Before leaving Seattle yesterday, we were lucky enough to visit the Chihuly Garden and Glass with our friend and his dad. We had seen some work by Chihuly (an incredibly skilled glass blower) earlier this year, but seeing it out in the garden was really a completely different experience. The colors were vibrant and worked harmoniously with the natural surroundings. I highly recommend you visit if you happen to be in Seattle.

After the gardens, we headed to the airport where I pulled out my pastels and pen, and got to work on day 85’s piece. I used simple shapes and lines to create the abstracted interpretation of the colorful work I had seen. Thanks, Jesse, for taking us!

Arting for 365 Day 81: Fluorescent Cut Out Abstraction

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I believe it was in the eighth grade that I worked lovingly on a detailed drawing, and halfway through, spilled food on it. I didn’t throw the work away and I actually don’t remember being too upset about it (my parents may remind me otherwise). Instead I simply covered the food stain by drawing an image of some sort over it.
I have held tight to the notion that something is only a “mess up” if you aren’t willing to change course.
Yesterday, a few minor botches in cutting started adding up to big botches. I took my own advice and changed course. Flipping my paper over in order to more easily ignore my original design, I began cutting freestyle. The result is this flowing cut paper design that I feel is a success.

This 8 x 10″ piece (super fluorescent but the pic didn’t capture it) will be available for purchase eventually. Right now I’m running a race in Washington! I’ll put it on Etsy when I get back.

Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Technically it is called a sphere, but I prefer ball. Either way, the object is such a lovely little thing. It has no top or bottom nor front or back. It presents itself equally to all and – due to its natural form – easily rolls with the punches. A lovely little thing, indeed.

Arting for 365 Day 71: Pinks and Oranges

Goal: To create one piece of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I happily dug into my stash of Sierra Nevada paper coasters, again, to create day 71’s work. To begin the piece, I taped the coasters together, similar to day 48. I’m a fan of this process for a few reasons:

1. When you lay the finished squares together, you see a larger work

2. Each individual square is its own little work of art

3. I really, for some odd reason, like the leftover marks from where I pull the tape off.

This coaster making go-round, I opted for a bright pink and orange color palette. Using my trusty ink pen I drew some foliage, and added a smidge of green to complete the piece. I really dig the work and think beer pints are going to feel right at home on these bold little guys.

On a somewhat separate note, I found out that coating the coasters with varnish is a great way to make them last. So I am making a bunch of new sets, which I’ll have to share when I get finished. I’m also starting to make prints of the originals. The slideshow has an example of one of the prints on a ceramic coaster tile – although it’s a wee bit hard to see w/the glass on top of it…

Day 64 (6/30/12): Sunrise Flower Abstraction

Orbs of morning dew coalesce on petals, leaves and mountain tops, as the sun wakes – slowly stretching its arms.

Rays of color emerge from the shadows.

It is morning.

Day 62 (6/29/12): Fluorescent Abstraction

4 x 5″ Iron-on Paper, ink, paper

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

Three or four years back I started making onesies for some of my preggor friends using iron on paper for the designs. The left over paper often had really great, bright colors and an interesting texture – similar to that of reptile skin. I didn’t throw much of that paper away, thinking it would be nice to use in other projects.

Yesterday I came across some of the fluorescent pink, rectangle filled paper I had kept. As the evening hours rolled in, I sat down and created this piece. I enjoy that the design in very soothing and organic while the color is very bold – almost obnoxious even.

Day 19: Beetle LoveGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge fan of bugs – beetles in particular. I love their shape, color and armor-like structure. To be perfectly honest my favorite way to view them is when a variety of types or species are neatly lined up for a photo shoot. This means of course they are dead, which is sad for them, but it really does make for a great picture.

Yesterday I decided to do a set of small drawings of these lovely little guys. I opted to shake things up a bit with color to create bold shapes and lines. The result is an illustrated take on the fascinating bugs.

Side – only slightly related- note: While I think beetles are great to look at, I can’t say I love the havoc the mountain pine beetle are wreaking in the Rocky Mountain Region.
