First Friday and Tile Making

Tonight was another First Friday Gallery Walk here in lovely Fort Collins. In preparation for the event I spent most of the day cleaning up my studio and hanging paintings which, unsurprisingly, turned out to be a big job. My art for today then, was completed as folks wandered through the gallery. I decided I would take another stab at painting tiles. I hadn’t touched them in ages and so it was a fun change of pace. I need a bit more practice and perhaps a larger brush in order to create a less streaky finish, but I am happy with the high contrast, flowing design.

He’d long since realized the bike didn’t really work for riding – at least not in the traditional sense. This was just fine by him. As he glided above the mountain tops he smiled at the sky above, then peered to the green valley below. Plots of rectangles and and dots of color acted as a landing strip. His wheel touched down and he glided in smoothly. This, he thought, is the way to ride.

Repetative Patterns and an Art Festival

As a person who rarely participates in showing work at arts festivals, I find the culture of artists who do frequently take part in these events to be fascinating. Like gypsies in a traveling show, these artists take on the art fair circuit as pros. They put up their walls and wares with ease, knowing to the minute, exactly how long set-up will take. They have fancy lights that will always work – even when a venue provides no light because they carry their own car battery for power. These artists’ cars have shelves and slots specially crafted to store their wares in the most effective manner. And they have mapped out their routes for the next 10 shows on their list. They are good.

They are also good people. They talk excitedly with festival goers about their work and are generous with sharing advice and even supplies with the girl who rarely does these things. I can’t imagine doing a show every weekend for three months straight, but these folks conquer the circuit like kings.

Wrapping Up June

June 28 Booth 1

June has been full of great arting opportunities for this girl: piano painting, studio touring, and now NicFesting. My mom and I spent hours roasting in the heat today setting up my booth for the festival. No matter. I think the three day arts event is going to be great! Thanks for all of the help, mom!

Work in Progress: Just No Birds Please

Work in Progress

Work in Progress, 9.75 x 24″

A preggors friend of mine called the other day to see if I would make some paintings similar to the bird with bike’s images for the baby’s room. I was delighted by the idea. There was, however, one caveat to the project. My friend cannot stand birds. They freak her out. Completely. So I am experimenting with a new, bird-less series with the same whimsy but different animals. I’m still working out the details, but here is one work in progress.

Branching Out

The task at hand was daunting. As the clock ticked and eyes watched, she waited to see what would come of it. Stretched beyond the point of comfort, she felt akin to what Gumby must feel when being pulled by two toddlers. Branching out is good, she convincingly told herself. Being stretched forces you to grow.

One Old and One New

A few Friday’s ago was the First Friday Gallery walk here in lovely Fort Collins. We at PSA  held our Bike Art exhibit and the Gallery folks once again did a great job of hanging the show – but there was a slight (but great) mix up. For the exhibit I entered two pieces: Bird on Bike and Birds Flying Bike. Bird on Bike sold before the show went up, but the “sold” indicator accidentally ended up on the wrong piece. My Bird on Bike was accidentally sold twice. Initially I felt bad, but I offered to paint the nice folks another, which they seemed thrilled with. For the last few days I have been doing just that. I took a few minutes at the end of the day to also do a quick sketch for  good measure.

Geometric Work in Progress for Tech Guy’s Office

Work in Progress Geometric Techhorizontal

18 x 36″ Acrylic on canvas

The company that the boyfriend works for just moved into a new office. He was told he must have art on his walls – which is a direct order I can get behind! The boyfriend requested a geometric piece similar to something I made a few years back. This piece will adorn the boring wall above his computer when I am done.
