Arting for 365 Day 52: Mountain Girl

With her southern drawl you’d never peg her as a mountain girl. Surely she would feel more comfortable in the Tennessee heat. Such an assumption would be wrong.

Instead she flees to the trails and enjoys the cool, crisp air that is present at elevations of this magnitude. She insists on collecting antlers, and skins, and anything woodsy; and saves the branches from fall trees to adorn her cabin for special occasions.

While she sits on her porch, sipping coffee from her earth colored mug, she delights in the fact that the deer nibbling on the grass in front of her will be back tomorrow. Because that is how it is in the mountains.

Day 51 (6/18/12): All a Part of the Plan

The elaborate scheme to capture the bug was foolproof. The man had hidden among the flowers for days, logging the flight pattern of the curious little creature he now watched. He laid low in the grass, peeking through thin blades in anticipation. Timing the gentle pinch of the puppet fingers was key. He had successfully pinched stray Cheerios in midair hundreds of times, so his confidence was not lacking.

With veteran-like skill, the man moved the strings. The puppet fingers stopped the bug in its tracks. The helpless animal buzzed madly.

The man, with pride in his incredible plan, smiled from ear to ear.  With another switch of the strings, he released the animal, and thought about what it was he might do next.

Day 50 (6/17/12): In Constant Motion

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I’ve got a few people in my life who seem to be curious about anything and everything. They are constantly seeking out new information, interested in nearly any subject and can’t help but ask why or how at least 1,000 times an hour. I love being around these people. Not only do I find them fascinating, but they tend to be talkers – which I enjoy since I am not always a big talker. AND, as a super bonus, they are just basically amazingly caring people.

Day 50’s project is a portrait of one of these folks. I have taken a somewhat sci-fi approach to portraying what I imagine his brain is like. Feelers reach out in all directions, trying to get a grasp of and understand everything around it.

Day 47 (6/15/12): Conglomeration

Each square 4.75 x 4.75″ Ink and watercolor on paper. I like the idea of  displaying these on the wall w/tacks so they can be easily rearranged and spaced as you like.

I had a lot of energy yesterday. Some of it was anxious – I think due to some lingering projects that just don’t seem to be going away – but a lot of it was a result of an eagerness to figure things out and to create. I have a notion all of the energy kind of balled up, conglomerating and morphing into day 47’s project. I’ve got to say, I’m pretty happy about it.

Starting in on the piece, I didn’t have a vision as to what the finished work would look like, but I did have an approach in mind. Similar to the exploration in some of my other projects, I thought about how pieces and details come together to create a whole. This time, though, instead of keeping the whole intact, I broke up the whole into 12 separate, yet connected pieces. I really dig the result.

Day 44 (6/11/12): Stick Legged Elephant

It is not very often that I get mad. I think most would even call me a laid back gal. There are exceptions to this, of course; such as with folks who are repeatedly rude, my interactions with computers that refuse to cooperate, and, it turns out, my dealings with a health insurance company who is raising my rates…again.

Day 44: Stick Legged Elephant Insurance

Text in this black & white print is the insurance letter I received informing me of my increase in rates.

Yesterday, after frustrating conversations with United Health and lengthy searches on the internet, I was mad. Lucky for me, the incident proved good fodder for day 44’s project. I quickly began to carve out an elephant with stick legs. The skinny structures seem useless other than as a means to prop the poor thing up. I have a myriad of ideas as to what I was trying to express while creating this piece, but I am more entertained by the boyfriend’s thoughts: “It looks like the elephant’s legs got run over by a lawnmower.” Sadly, he couldn’t afford the health insurance to fix them.

Day 42 (6/9/12): Plinko

8.5 x 11″ mixed media on cardboard

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

I am a titch obsessed with the smell of wildfires. I like to think I have an amazing sense for detecting them via snout. In fact, I would go so far to say my uncanny ability is as near to a super power as one can get.  That is why I was shocked to see smoke from an 8,000 acre fire burning outside of Ft. Collins yesterday, long before I smelled it. I fear my super power is deteriorating. But don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I can replace it with another if needed.

For day 42’s piece I used black and red as homage to the smoke and fire taking over the hills outside of Fort Collins. I wound leaves and roots through what made me think of a red, plinko-like design created by painting bubble wrap and pressing it onto cardboard.

Day 33 95/31/12): Balls Rolling in an Orderly FashionAs I sat down to create day 33’s project, I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. And not for a reason you might think. I am finishing up a few side jobs right now that are requiring quite a bit of my attention, but that was not the reason for my anxiety. Nor was the personal goal of creating art everyday. Nope, what got me all a flutter yesterday was my Twitter account.

Day 33: Balls Rolling in an Orderly Fashion DetailI had always thought that the Twits (unofficial term) were celebrities and other folks talking about fluff. But after looking into the Twitter a bit more I realized that it is an awesome resource for articles on art and design. Not to mention I like to hear some of the ridiculous things my brother has to say.  I would wager that most people follow hundreds, maybe even thousands of other people. I think I am following 30ish and it seems to be too much for me to take. Overstimulation. My brain seems exhausted as it tries to keep up with the sometimes great, sometimes not-so-great articles. The boyfriend questioned whether I was attempting to read all of those articles, which would definitely leave me overwhelmed. But I’m not. The information rolls onto my screen in what appears to be an orderly fashion, and I am left to wonder if my brain will ever adapt to this crazy stimulus.

Arting for 365 Day 30: Subtleties

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days Day 30 (5/28/12): Subtleties

Typically the work I create is high contrast, high color, or both. Much like some of the colorful outfits I wear while running, there is little which is subtle. (Probably a fact: Wearing a minimum of three completely different colors while running makes you faster.) So yesterday I thought it would be a good challenge to take a stroll down a more muted path in creating my project.

Using pencil, I began by drawing a geometric design. I was oh-so-tempted to pull out my trusty ink pen to bring contrast to the shapes, but I stuck to pencil. I applied variations of tinted white acrylics to the canvas all while telling myself to embrace and enjoy this subtle approach.

By the time I was finished, I had come to really enjoy this break from my norm. I feel like it was probably good for my brain to approach a project in such a different way. But I also have to say I don’t see myself doing too much of it again soon.

The image below was taken at a different time of day- which goes to show how much this work reflects and reacts to the light. Day 30: Subtleties (later in the day)

Day 24 (5/22/12): Seedy

Goal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

If you have been following my daily endeavor, it may be obvious to you that I am fascinated by the little seeds I found and used in day 10 and day 14’s projects. I love how delicate they appear – even though they are pretty rigid, the textured lines that grow from their spine outward, and their perfect wing-like shape. So I thought I would interpret these traits by incorporating a drawing of the seed in day 24’s piece.

It was clear to me that I needed to pair my drawing with seeds for the 11 x 14” work. But after gluing them down it was obvious that the large drawing and the seeds competed with each other – fighting for attention and definitely not working together. I hoped that glazing each seed with paint would fix the problem, but instead, a muddy mess appeared. The seeds had to go. As I began peeling each off, great silhouettes appeared, allowing me to explore my drawing a bit further.

Day 22 (5/21/12): Topographic TrashGoal: To create one work of art each day for 365 consecutive days

As I picked up yesterday’s art material from off of the ground I wondered how smart of a move it was. It was ragged, torn and initially, just looked a bit unsanitary. But upon closer inspection, I realized it – which seems to be some sort of paper- had just been weathered by the recent rain.

I glued my newly found trash-treasure to an 8 x 10” oil board and applied paint to the grooves and mountains of the tattered, island shaped paper. Breaking up the space surrounding it, I painted lines and shapes that made their way onto the weathered surface. I thought that perhaps I could make a beautiful piece from this worn paper but as I worked with it, I realized it had a personality all its own. No matter how much paint I applied, it was going to stay worn and ragged. There was no “prettying” it up. And for some reason, I am perfectly content with that.
