Many were quick to point out his shortcomings – most of which were physical:

Short and squat.

Bug eyes on the back of his head.

And that beak! They said it looked good on other birds. The hummingbird wore it well.

He brushed such short-sided comments aside, knowing they were wrong.

Now though, with his beak entwined in spindly branches with no hope of untangling, he would rescind one thing.  The hummingbird did wear it better.

His body outstretched, he feels at home on this sturdy plank. With age he has gotten to know the waters more intimately – understanding that the tides reward patience.

Soon the waves will roll in and he will ride them as long as his sturdy feet allow. Knowing that tomorrow they may not choose to come around.

Smart as the  raven was, this new predicament was sure to challenge. For legs like straw and wings of sticks will only get a clever bird so far.

Slightly rattled but with his wits still about him, he paced along the shoreline.

“Think, think,” he cawed

I was really hoping to get the painting I was working on finished for today’s post. Turns out that was a pipe dream. Instead I completed a smaller piece yesterday.

Not wanting to tear up nice, new big sheets of paper, I found a bunch scraps and stitched them together, then proceeded to draw a very simple design. I didn’t think I’d like this piece as much as I do. Something about the softness of the paper, the simple lines and the way the work is physically bound together while maintaining individual parts pleases me.

To distort the morning light

And reflect upon flowering leaves
