Repetative Patterns and an Art Festival

As a person who rarely participates in showing work at arts festivals, I find the culture of artists who do frequently take part in these events to be fascinating. Like gypsies in a traveling show, these artists take on the art fair circuit as pros. They put up their walls and wares with ease, knowing to the minute, exactly how long set-up will take. They have fancy lights that will always work – even when a venue provides no light because they carry their own car battery for power. These artists’ cars have shelves and slots specially crafted to store their wares in the most effective manner. And they have mapped out their routes for the next 10 shows on their list. They are good.

They are also good people. They talk excitedly with festival goers about their work and are generous with sharing advice and even supplies with the girl who rarely does these things. I can’t imagine doing a show every weekend for three months straight, but these folks conquer the circuit like kings.

Wrapping Up June

June 28 Booth 1

June has been full of great arting opportunities for this girl: piano painting, studio touring, and now NicFesting. My mom and I spent hours roasting in the heat today setting up my booth for the festival. No matter. I think the three day arts event is going to be great! Thanks for all of the help, mom!

Branching Out

The task at hand was daunting. As the clock ticked and eyes watched, she waited to see what would come of it. Stretched beyond the point of comfort, she felt akin to what Gumby must feel when being pulled by two toddlers. Branching out is good, she convincingly told herself. Being stretched forces you to grow.

Sketching With Family

Ink on paper (sketchbook)

It’s been a fun-filled weekend spent with family. We’ve planted flowers, hiked, jogged – it’s been an all around good time. The card game Pinochle has also been played quite a bit around here. My family has always been pretty gung-ho about the game, while I, on the other hand, have not.  This works out just fine though, as I get some good chunks of  time to sketch while they are busy bidding and trumping across the room.

On another note, today happens to be my parents 45th anniversary! Amazing.

Adding Some Color to a Black and White World

“Go with the flow,” they had said. So he hopped in his rowboat and waited for a tide. But ponds in the middle of suburbia offer little in the way of waves. He sat at the ready – alert to inspiration. Somehow, though, he couldn’t shake the sense that such a tactic may not garner the grandest results.

The tooth had been giving him fits for days now. He’d tried some herbal remedies and ointments but they just weren’t cutting it. After reading up on the issue in Everyday Health Questions Answered; A Guide to Holistic Healing, the progressive lion determined the tooth must go.

While he couldn’t say he was thrilled with the idea of removing his canine, he did feel oddly pleased with his recent choice to switch to a vegan diet – a justification of sorts. As his tooth was being pulled he reflected that, without a doubt, this all natural approach to life was really the best thing he could do for himself.
I drew the original black and white images clear back in July. You can see the rhino here and the lion here.  Today I took the time to add color to the saved images in Photoshop. The results make me smile. I hope you enjoyed!

Red Sketchbook

I bought myself a wonderful gift. A reward of sorts for finishing my 365 days of arting and blogging.

She’s perfect. Red and hard bound with pages that lay flat. Her paper is heavy, keeping the stories drawn or painted on one page secret from those to be told on another. She’s small enough to hold easily, but not so small as to fall off of a lap if that is where drawing should take place.  She has an elastic cord that closes her cover tightly, keeping safe the pages inside.

She does not have a name yet. Certainly someday she will. And when I call it out or ask for an opinion on a line or a color or the state of the world, her pages will flicker in response.

You wouldn’t know it by looking at him. On the surface he always appeared so gruff – half asleep even. Onlookers would see him soaking lazily in the muddy waters and think, “What a bore.”

The cool hippo was anything but. As stars shone above in the wee hours of night the cool hippo came alive. He played a saxophone that rivaled Coltrane. Smooth, silky; the notes flowed from the him like the waters of the Nile. Passers by fell silent with awe wondering where in the world these sounds were coming from?

I am back home after traveling for a week to Twin Falls, ID. I headed up that direction after my sister convinced me I should enter Twin’s city-wide art show. I had a wonderful time visiting my neeps and running around getting things ready for the show. The opening Friday was really lovely too – lots of great people, food and drink. I have to say, though, it does feel good to be back home.

She prided herself in blending in and chastised those who did not. There was no need for showiness, she thought. Those fish who swam in salty waters – with their bright blues, greens and pinks were all about flash and fiction. Not her style.

But everything can be taken too far. Soon the naive catfish found herself as a fly on the wall – camouflaged by wings. No longer heard or seen.
